What if growing your photography business didn’t mean squeezing more sessions into your calendar? I learned that the path to more profit and more freedom wasn’t becoming a better photographer or working harder. It was building a better system that helped clients confidently invest in artwork they truly loved.

So if you want to make more money with fewer clients while building a photography business that gives you your life back, hit play and enjoy the episode!

THE BUSINESS MODEL THAT WAS KEEPING ME BROKE

When I opened my studio in 2001, I charged $75 for a session that included 36 hand-printed black-and-white proofs. My costs were about $65.

I was working hard for roughly $10 a session.

The problem wasn’t my photography. It was my business model.

I was giving clients everything upfront, then hoping they’d come back and order. Instead, they’d say they needed to think about it, talk to their spouse, or decide later.

That realization changed everything: My job wasn’t just to create beautiful portraits. My job was to guide clients toward actually enjoying those portraits as artwork in their homes.

THE SHIFT TO IN-PERSON SALES

I stopped giving clients proofs and started sitting beside them to make decisions together.

We talked about:

  • Which portraits they loved
  • Where the artwork would hang
  • What size worked for their space
  • How the finished piece should be presented

My first big order using this photography sales process was $1,800. That ONE order replaced 24 of my old $75 sessions.

That’s leverage.

FEWER CLIENTS, HIGHER ORDERS, MORE FREEDOM

As my average order increased, something surprising happened. I needed fewer clients.

At my happiest, I’ve served fewer than 100 clients a year, sometimes closer to 50, while my income continued to grow.

And when you serve a right-fit family extraordinarily well, they can become clients for life. I’ve had families invest more than $100,000 with me across the years.

This isn’t about pushing people to spend more. It’s about creating an incredible client experience and a repeatable system that makes buying artwork easier.

MY 4-STEP BOUTIQUE PROFIT MODEL

1. The First Phone Call
Explain your value, talk about pricing, and determine whether they’re a right-fit client.

2. The Pre-Session Consultation
Discover what matters to them, where they need artwork, and what they want to remember about this season of life.

3. The Intentional Session
Photograph for the plan instead of overshooting and hoping something works.

4. The In-Person Ordering Appointment
Guide clients through their portraits, sizes, room views, and artwork decisions together.

Follow the process consistently, and your results become more predictable.

THE REAL SECRET IS YOUR SYSTEM

A 30-minute session can produce a $75 sale or a $7,500 sale. The difference isn’t necessarily the photography.

It’s the system.

When you stop believing that more clients, more hours, and better images are the only paths to growth, you can start building a business with real leverage.

You can work less, serve people more deeply, and create the flexibility to actually enjoy the life you’re working so hard to build.

Now it’s your turn. Look at your photography business and ask yourself: Where am I leaving my clients alone to make difficult decisions instead of confidently guiding them?
